In this Bible study from Calvary Hanford, we continue our verse by verse journey through the Gospel of Mark in the New Testament.

In this message, titled Hard Knock Wife, we look at Mark 12:18-27, where Jesus faces a trick question from the Sadducees. The Sadducees were the religious elite of ancient Israel who did not believe in the resurrection, angels, or the supernatural. They bring Jesus a bizarre hypothetical riddle about a woman who marries seven consecutive brothers, asking whose wife she will be in the afterlife.

They thought they had trapped Him. They were using a highly unusual scenario to try and make the concept of the resurrection look completely ridiculous. But Jesus responds directly by pointing out two massive errors in their thinking. He tells them they are mistaken because they do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.

This text gives us a clear look at what eternity actually looks like. Jesus explains that our relationships in heaven will be completely different than our relationships on earth.

Jesus uses this interaction to show that we cannot force the realities of the next life into the small boxes of our current earthly experiences. He then points them back to the Old Testament, reminding them that God called Himself the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob centuries after they had passed away. He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
